This 3-day workshop ( each session runs 11:00 - 16:00/30) is the perfect introduction to the craft of glaze making. Through hands-on activities and instruction, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of glaze fundamentals. On the first day, you will learn the basics of glaze preparation and how to mix glazes with different types of materials. On the second day, you will explore various techniques to create unique glaze finishes. Finally, on the third day, you will practice glaze application and explore different firing techniques. With the guidance of our experienced instructors, you will be sure to leave this workshop with the skills to create and apply your own glazes. 

This is a comprehensive introduction to glaze making. In 3 sessions we will cover a large breadth of knowledge, including:

  • Basic glaze theory - What is a GLAZE?

  • What is Oxide theory?

  • Basic glaze materials that make up a glaze

During this workshop you will learn foundations of glaze making . Through theoretical and hands on activities we will cover materials used in glaze recipes, how they melt and interact, what is a base glaze and how to alter it. Suited to complete beginners , these sessions are created to familiarise students with basics of glaze mixing and equip them with a set of exercises to create their own glazes.

Classes run from 11:00 - 16:30 with a 30 min lunch break. All materials and firings included.

Session 1 - We will cover basic glaze chemistry and discuss other factors affecting glaze such as water, application, clay body and others. Hands on : create test tiles and conduct single material melt tests

Session 2 - Theory re-cap and melt test discussion. Hands on : 4 (ex quartz, feldspar, china clay and frit ) Single material biaxial blend. Each pair is encouraged to pick a slightly different set of materials.

Session 3- Mixing a batch of base glaze. -> conducting volumetric line blending with : metal colouring oxide, stain , opacifier/other material.

You will create test tiles that are suited to your work and discuss other factors affecting glaze such as water, application, clay body and others.


You will conduct single material melt tests and a biaxal blend of these single materials to create a base glaze. In the final session you will line blend a variety of colorants and discover how a diverse pallet can be created from a single glaze.
