What temperature should I fire my GLOST glaze to?

GLOST glazes are formulated to be fired at 1240 - 1260 C or at cone 6. Final firing temperature and how it was reached is an important factor in the final glaze results. We recommend testing on your clay, and in your kiln/atmosphere. Use of Orton cones is also advisable - it is important to measure the ‘heat work’.

Are GLOST glazes appropriate for functional pieces?

We supply a variety of glazes, they include both functional and sculptural glazes. Depending on the recipe some of our glazes are only ‘decorative’. For example barium based glazes produce exciting colour responses but is not food safe. Another range of glazes inappropriate for functional ware are textured glazes. This is due to the textured surface potentially accumulating unhygienic bacteria.

GLOST glazes - are they powdered or already mixed in a solution?

Currently GLOST glazes are supplied in a ‘brush on’, liquid form. This ensures the mixture remains in suspense and provides a greater consistency of finish. No measuring required! They are available in 200ml and 500ml jars.

Why does my GLOST glaze look different?

There are many factors affecting a glaze, but a few important variables are as follows:

  • clay body composition;

  • thickness of application;

  • bisque temperature of your work;

  • thickness of your work;

  • firing temperature;

  • heat work during the firing.

We recommend first testing the product, according to your planned application, to ensure the results are as close as possible to your expectations.
