dragonfly-tool-with-classic-7-tungsten-blade
BuschKraft Dragonfly Tool with Classic 7 Tungsten Blade

The BuschKraft Dragonfly Tool with a Classic 7 Tungsten Blade is a pottery trimming tool: a knurled metal Dragonfly handle fitted with a tungsten carbide trimming blade in the Classic 7 profile. Made in the USA and designed by Nicholai Busch.

The Classic 7 profile has a clean, flat cutting edge with a small square tip at the end. It works well on straight and flat surfaces, the small curve reaches into corners, and the hooked shape gets inside feet and into tight recesses. The small tip leaves sharp inside corners.

Tungsten carbide keeps its edge far longer than plain steel, cutting cleanly through leather-hard porcelain and stoneware and standing up to heavily grogged clay. The blade is sharpened before it leaves the maker. It does wear in the end, and can be resharpened with a diamond file or rotary bit. It is also brittle: if dropped, the blade can break, so store the tool with care.

Blade: Classic 7, tungsten carbide

Best for: trimming feet, flat surfaces, corners and tight recesses in leather-hard clay

Handle: knurled, tapered body in machined, anodised aluminium with a stainless steel collet

Collet: takes any solid tip with a 3 to 4.5mm shaft, swapped by hand with no extra tools

Length: about 17.5cm

Part of the BuschKraft Dragonfly System, a modular pottery tool inspired by drafting pens.
